Designer: NYC or Telecommute
Overview
Parse.ly, a venture-backed startup in NYC, gives the best publishers online (USNews, PCWorld, Mashable, etc.) in-depth, actionable insight about their users and content through a suite of products that make up the Parse.ly Publisher Platform.
Why
We are looking for a Designer to bring passion for beauty, function, and simplicity to our product and brand. Our user base of editors, writers, and website operators deal with legacy, shoddily-constructed tools that are forced upon them. Already, they describe Parse.ly's products as "a breath of fresh air" and "elegant". With your help, we hope to delight our users even further, and raise the bar for web software. Personally, this is an opportunity to embed yourself in a friendly and tight-knit engineering and sales team, avoid the corporate nonsense typical at most jobs, and make this the project of your lifetime.
Ours is a team inspired by great design, but currently ill-equipped to execute on that inspiration. We are inspired by Edward Tufte, who believes that interesting data, beautifully visualized, needs no ornamentation. We are inspired by the designers of Apple, who believe in the radical idea that computers and software can be simultaneously human and powerful. We are inspired by web applications like Mint and Github, which take mundane, everyday tasks and make them more enjoyable through elegance and usability.
We would love to hear who inspires you, and why.
Responsibilities
As Designer, you will take full ownership of the following Parse.ly assets:
- our homepage and associated company culture pages
- our landing pages and marketing pages for our products
- any advertising creatives for marketing efforts
- design elements used in product demo videos
- diagrams and graphics used in online help materials
- print materials used for conferences (posters, brochures)
- brand identify materials (business cards)
- development and business blogs run by company
- social media branding
In addition, you will develop new assets that will be re-used by the engineering team, including:
- style guides for our web applications
- iconography for web applications
- logomarks and icons for mobile, desktop, tablet
- typography for web applications
- reusable design elements (buttons, menus, textures)
Finally, you will also be expected to be the leading light when it comes to product idea wireframes, data visualization suggestions, product usability improvements, etc.
Parse.ly tracks over a half-billion page views a month, and we continue to grow. If data visualization is an interest of yours, you will find no shortage of ways to apply your design chops here.
Skills Needed
No programming experience required. We do not believe in unicorn designers. If you are a graphic designer with classic skills (hand drawing, sketching) and digital skills (Photoshop, Illustrator), then you are a perfect fit for this role. That is, as long as you have the opinion and conviction to back up your use of those techniques.
As for programming experience (e.g. HTML/CSS/JavaScript), if you have it, by all means, apply to this position. However, we don't expect you to know how to program. Good design is hard enough, without understanding the idiosyncracies of good code design, architecture, and computer science. Leave that stuff to us. If you are interested in learning HTML/CSS/JavaScript, we are glad to share our knowledge, but we are looking for someone who is handy with a pencil and a mouse/stylus. More than anything else, we are looking for someone who spends as much time thinking about good design and user experience as we spend thinking about good code and elegant algorithms.
What You Get
- Work out of a state-of-the-art office when in NYC.
- Work from home or anywhere else.
- Competitive retainer, with the ability to convert into salary and benefits for full-time role.
- Meet and connect with executives, writers, and editors at the biggest publishers online.
- Work with the brightest startup team around, one that is hyper-focused on success.
- Learn how to start and grow a business as an entrepreneur.
- Make a name for yourself in digital media.
Send us a note with a link to your portfolio and/or personal website and anything else you think will convince us you're the right fit. Remember, we're not a corporate recruiter, so no need for formality.
